(INTELLIHUB) — Significant earthquake swarms in the Brawley Seismic Zone have some on edge, fearing the worst is yet to come. One online enthusiast warns of the buildup of ground tension in SoCal’s BSZ between the San Andreas Fault and the Imperial Fault. A map published by Cal Tech’s SCEDC reveals that the area in and around the Salton Sea has been inundated with earthquake swarms over the past week. Some of the tremors have been in the magnitude fours, affirming fears.
“I don’t believe we are done yet, folks,” says the voice behind the TheEarthMaster YouTube channel. “This is definitely some major uptick in activity taking place here. I would be on guard tonight.”
The increased frequency and size of events are concerning and warrant further investigation.
Two earthquakes above a magnitude three struck on Sunday seven miles north of Westmorland, California, followed by an M 3.3 on Monday that hit 8 miles north-north-east of Borrego Springs at a depth of 11 miles. Recent media reports have some worried that there might be more to the story than meet the eye. Especially with all of the current unrest.
That seismologist Lucy Jones is there to “calm the nerves” of the general public, says the YouTuber with over 51,000 subscribers.
“She’s there for the people,” he says. “We are looking at significant movement.”
Even a moderate earthquake in the region could trigger the San Andreas Fault, which has built up pressure over several hundred years, he explains.
