French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin said that authorities made nearly 200 arrests on Thursday while hundreds of thousands of fed-up workers protested in the streets of Paris and other cities.
Unofficial numbers tallied up to 800,000 people unwilling to the government’s illegal extension of the retirement age from 62 to 64. As a result, labor union leaders fear more violence is on the way.
“This is a response to the falsehoods expressed by the president and his incomprehensible stubbornness,” said CFDT Union Deputy Secretary General Marylise Leon in a statement. “The responsibility of this explosive situation lies not with the unions but with the government.”
Protesters targeted transportation depots, railways, and fuel refineries, which have led to fuel shortages in West and Southeast France.
Black Bloc protesters have caused damage in parts of Paris, making passage nearly impossible.
